Están todos en inglés (¡ojalá pronto traduzcan alguno más!) y, al igual que los anteriores, están publicados por First Second, en tapa blanda y con 128 páginas. La edad, nuevamente, a partir de 7 años, pero ya sabes que esto es muy relativo.

Hoy traigo una colección de novelas gráficas dedicadas a diferentes temas de CIENCIA que está GENIAL. Una forma muy divertida de ampliar conocimientos sobre un montón de campos: desde los árboles hasta el sistema solar, pasando por las plagas y los arrecifes de coral, por poner algunos ejemplos.
Para probar la colección, primero cogimos un título en inglés que en ese momento estaba a unos 3€ (ya sabes que voy avisando de las ofertas en nuestra página de facebook): SOLAR SYSTEM. Our Place in Space. Nos gustó tanto tanto, que decidimos comprar uno en castellano: MURCIÉLAGOS. Aprendiendo a Volar, y es el que te voy a enseñar con más detalle.
Al ser una colección bastante amplia, he dividido el post en dos partes. En esta primera te enseño los que tienen temáticas relacionadas con los seres vivos, y en el siguiente post te hablaré del resto.

Esta novela gráfica, mitad ficción mitad informativa, cuenta la historia de un pequeño murciélago marrón que se pierde en el desierto de Sonora, un desierto localizado en América del Norte, abarcando dos países, Estados Unidos y México.
Mientras busca insectos para comer, se desorienta y acaba entre un grupo de personas que están de excursión por el desierto. Esta gente se asusta y, al hacer aspavientos, le rompen un ala. Entonces, el guía de la expedición lo lleva a un hospital de murciélagos.
En este hospital, nuestro protagonista será atendido por Rebecca, una veterinaria especialista en animales silvestres, que lo cuidará hasta su completa recuperación.
Allí conocerá también a otras especies de murciélagos. Se sorprenderá al descubrir que unos liban néctar, algunos comen fruta, otros insectos o peces. De especie en especie, Pequeño Marrón se dará cuenta de que cada grupo de murciélagos es importante para su ecosistema, porque ayudan a polinizar flores, dispersar semillas o controlar plagas. Además, aprenderá cómo ha evolucionado la relación entre los murciélagos y los seres humanos.
Además de contarnos una bonita historia de recuperación y cuidado de animales, el libro está plagado de informacióndatos interesantes sobre los murciélagos desde la primera página: anatomía, diferentes especies, hábitos alimenticios, ecolocalización, amenazas y conservación.
Nos enteramos de datos tan curiosos como por qué hay murciélagos que se alimentan de sangre, por ejemplo, qué es una percha de murciélagos o en qué consiste la quiropterofilia. ¿Sabeis qué partes conforman las alas de un murciélago?
En segundo plano, el cómic nos ofrece también la historia de Sarah, una adolescente que estaba en la excursión y que fue testigo del momento de pánico vivido. En un principio parecía que pasaba de todo, pero luego dio una lección a todo el mundo preocupándose por el murciélago herido, visitándolo en el hospital y descubriendo así una incipiente vocación de voluntariado.
Con los datos sobre conservación de estos mamíferos también nos asombramos. No sabíamos lo que era una «emergencia» en este contexto (cuando toda una colonia de murciélagos deja una percha a la vez). La cueva Bracken, en Texas, tiene la emergencia más grande del mundo, por ejemplo.
En las últimas páginas, el libro nos ofrece un listado de lecturas recomendadas, otro de las carreras relacionadas con el estudio de los murciélagos, un glosario y unas pinceladas sobre algunos aspectos de anatomía, como las partes del rostro de un murciélago.
Un último detalle: la traducción de este cómic está en versión latina, con algunas expresiones que pueden no resultar familiares. Es algo que a mí personalmente me encanta, porque me recuerda a mi niñez.

Te dejo ahora una lista del resto de libros que componen esta fantástica colección. En castellano, de momento, hay tres traducidos. El resto está en inglés. Te dejo algunas fotos y una pequeña reseña de la editorial.
Todos son en tapa blanda y de 128 páginas. La edad recomendada varía según el título, entre los 7 y los 10 años, pero yo creo que esto es muy relativo, y que depende tanto o más del interés de la persona que de su edad, quizás.
La verdad es que nos ha parecido una serie de cómics informativos estupenda, así que seguramente nos cojamos algunos otros títulos. ¡Encima tienen un precio estupendo!

Hoy hago un post rápido para recopilar algunos libros de historia en inglés que tenemos en nuestra Lista de Deseos Curiosa. Importante: no los conozco todos por dentro, pero los he seleccionado porque me parecen curiosos, porque conozco otros libros de la misma editorial, o porque tenemos referencias de la misma autoría por otras de sus obras.
Esto se me ocurrió a raíz de una pregunta que lanzó en su cuenta de InstagramMariña, del genial blog Spanglishpeque (¡que ya estáis tardando en descubrir!). Son una familia que cría bilingüe en España utilizando el método OPOL (one parent, one language), y su blog tiene muchísimos recursos e información interesante, además de aportar su propia experiencia en esta aventura.
Ahora te dejo un listado de los libros que tengo apuntados. No están ordenados, simplemente los voy poniendo según el tiempo que llevan en nuestra lista. Te dejo los datos básicos y la reseña de la editorial en inglés. Si ya los conoces, ¡me encantará que nos cuentes tu opinión en comentarios!

Tenemos dos títulos de esta serie en castellano y os puedo decir que son una auténtica joya. Transmite la historia de la vida como si fuese un cuento, maravillosamente narrado, que a mis peques les fascina.

Pues tiene también una serie de libros, DISCOVER, sobre el imperio romano, el imperio azteca y la antigua Grecia que estoy segura de que son impresionantes también. Están disponibles tanto en inglés como en castellano.

Este libro lo tengo en la lista primero porque me ha conquistado la ilustración (siempre me atrae mucho este punto, y suelo acertar luego si el libro nos gusta o no solo por la portada). En este enlace tienes la web de la ilustradora, Julie McLaughlin: tiene un montón de trabajos que tengo que investigar, porque tienen una pinta estupenda.
Y el segundo motivo es por lo curiosa que me resulta en la temática. Fíjate en lo que dice la editorial:

Este me pareció un libro curioso porque podemos seguir la historia a través de los cambios que van ocurriendo en una ciudad a lo largo de los siglos. Siendo de la editorial DK, tiene que ser espectacular.

En casa los libros de la editorial DK triunfan siempre. Sobre Historia en castellano tenemos este libro (en inglés aquí), pero hoy te enseño este otro, que abarca más épocas, y que si lo hubiera traducido, lo hubiese cogido seguro.

A este libro le tengo muchas ganas por su tremenda originalidad. Se trata de un paseo por la historia a través de los colores y los usos que se les ha dado en cada época. De este autor tenemos EL LIBRO DE LAS COMPARACIONES, que es uno de los favoritísimos en casa.

La pequeña Gente Curiosa y yo nos enteramos de que el 3 de marzo es el Día Mundial de la Vida Silvestre, y nos pareció una fecha muy adecuada para enseñarte el último álbum ilustrado de Heather Lang: The Leaf Detective, dedicado a la figura de MARGARET D. LOWMAN.
Quién es Margaret Lowman
No conocíamos a esta científica y nos hemos asombrado leyendo sobre su trabajo. «Dosel Meg» o «Canopy Meg«, como se la suele conocer, es una bióloga estadounidense experta y pionera en la ecología de doseles arbóreos, diseñando estructuras y pasarelas de acceso para estudiar el dosel de los árboles y resolver misterios del mundo de los bosques, especialmente relacionados con plagas de insectos y salud del ecosistema.
El dosel arbóreo o dosel forestal (también llamado a veces canopia, del inglés canopy) es el hábitat que comprende la región de las copas y regiones superiores de los árboles de un bosque. Alberga una flora y una fauna única y especializada que no se puede encontrar en ninguna otra capa del bosque, especialmente en la selva.
Leyendo sobre esto, aprendimos mucho sobre el factor ecológico importante que representa este dosel, cómo influye en el suelo, qué funciones tiene e, incluso, cómo se mide.
Entre las estructuras diseñadas por Lowman para el estudio de los doseles, nos encontramos con el impresionante dirigible que lleva acoplada una balsa de dosel inflable, la cual proporciona una extensa superficie de trabajo (unos 400 m2) sobre las copas de los árboles.

Álbum Ilustrado sobre Meg Lowman
Después de conocer a esta bióloga, nos alegramos aún más de haber encontrado este precioso álbum ilustrado, que además salió publicado hace muy poco (febrero 2021).
La reseña de la editorial nos cuenta lo siguiente:
«Meg Lowman siempre estuvo fascinada por el mundo natural sobre su cabeza. Los colores, las ramas y, sobre todo, las hojas y los misteriosos organismos que allí habitan. Como científica, Meg se propuso trepar e investigar las copas de los árboles de la selva tropical, y ser la primera científica en hacerlo. Pero se encontró con un desafío tras otro. Los profesores varones no la dejaban entrar a sus aulas, era difícil llegar al dosel alto y, lo peor de todo, la gente no paraba de talar los bosques. Pero Meg nunca se rindió. Estudió, inventó y perseveró, no solo creando un futuro para ella como científica, sino asegurándose de que las selvas tropicales también tuvieran un futuro. Trabajando en estrecha colaboración con Meg Lowman, la autora Heather Lang y la artista Jana Christy capturan maravillosamente el mundo de Meg en las copas de los árboles.»

Hace tiempo te enseñaba en este post el libro ANIMALES. Coleccionista de Huesos. Esta vez nos hemos animado con el siguiente título de la colección, CRÁNEOS.
Se trata de un libro informativo que nos muestra las características de los CRÁNEOS de 21 especímenes animales. ¿Sabes cómo son de cerca los colmillos de un elefante? ¿Conoces el extraño pico del cálao rinoceronte? ¿Sabes por qué el hipopótamo puede abrir tanto la boca? Pues en este libro nos los cuentan.
Empieza con una introducción donde nos explica para qué sirve esta estructura, por qué partes está formada y que hay cráneos de muchas formas y tamaños, que se han ido adaptando a las necesidades de cada especie.
También nos habla del material de que están compuestos los cráneos y su desarrollo. Es muy curioso leer las características que conocemos de nuestro propio esqueleto, pero con fotos de los cráneos de otros animales. Mismas estructuras con diferentes adaptaciones.
Después de la introducción, empieza la sección dedicada a describir cada uno de los 21 ejemplares. La estructura es siempre al misma:
Primero se presenta al animal en concreto, en una doble página espectacular, con fondo oscuro y una gran ilustración del cráneo correspondiente, sobre la que se señalan las partes más importantes o llamativas. Se dan también unas pinceladas de información a modo de píldoras sobre esa especie. Incluye fotos reales del animal y, un dato curioso que en casa gusta mucho, un pequeño dibujo que compara el tamaño del animal con el de un ser humano promedio.
La siguiente doble página es un «apéndice» que nos explica algo relacionado con ese animal, ya sea el grupo taxonómico al que pertenece o un grupo de animales con los que tenga algo en común. Se mencionan algunas características generales y se presentan otros géneros del mismo grupo, con imágenes reales.
Al igual que nos pasó con su compañero de colección, la estética del libro en general nos recuerda mucho a Harry Potter: tal cual parece un libro sacado de las estanterías de la clase de Pociones o de Defensa Contra las Artes Oscuras…
Solamente añadiría un detalle: quizás pondría los nombres científicos de cada espécimen. Aún así, el primer tomo, el de Animales, fue un exitazo total en casa. Fue el preferido de Curioso_3 durante mucho tiempo. Este se lo vamos a regalar por su 5º cumpleaños… ¡y creo que le va a encantar!
